Armenian President Armen Sarkisian has resigned. He said he lacked authority in the position and was incapable of influencing the country’s policies and issues of war and peace.

Sargsyan’s statement said Armenia is living in a reality where the president “cannot use most of his potential” to solve systemic problems.

He expressed hope that after possible constitutional amendments, the next president will be able to work “in a more balanced environment.”

Armen Sarkisian has led the state since the spring of 2018.
