Navalny’s new trial begins in the penal colony

A new criminal case against oppositionist Alexei Navalny began at Vladimir Region penal colony No. 2. He is accused of fraud and contempt of court.

The case of large-scale fraud was initiated against Navalny and his associates in December 2020. According to investigators, they embezzled 356 million rubles of donations.

The case of insulting a judge followed a libel case against a World War II veteran; during the trial, Navalny received more than ten reprimands.

Journalists are allowed into the court session only with a notebook and a pen. It is forbidden to bring phones to the session.

Navalny faces up to 10 years in prison.
