In the Ukrainian city of Irpen, in a war zone near Kiev, an American journalist was killed.

Documents found with the deceased journalist include the name of Brent Renaud, a 50-year-old documentary filmmaker from New York City. Among the papers is an ID card from The New York Times, leading to speculation about Renault’s work for the paper. The newsroom later stated that Brent Renaud was no longer an employee of the paper at the time of his death.

On the Ukrainian side, Brent Renault’s death in Irpen was reported on Sunday by Andrey Nebitov, head of the Chief Department of the National Police in the Kiev region.

The exact circumstances of the incident in the area, where non-intensive small arms and artillery fire was heard, are not yet clear.
