Former Moldovan President Igor Dodon was charged with abuse of power as Minister of Economy in 2008. This is reported by TASS with reference to the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office.

Earlier in June, the Moldovan court extended Dodon's house arrest by 30 days. On May 24, in the evening, after a search in his house, Dodon was placed in a pre-trial detention center in Chisinau. The prosecutor's office of the country reported that the ex-president and his wife's brother Petr Merineanu were detained for 72 hours.
Dodon is suspected of taking a bribe from the oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc. In 2020, ex-deputy Iurie Renita published a video of the meeting of the then President Dodon with the leader of the Democratic Party, Plahotniuc, and his deputy, Sergei Yaralov. The recording shows that Dodon received a package from Plahotniuc, in which, according to Renita, there was a large amount of money. From the conversation between Plahotniuc and Dodon, it follows that the money was intended to finance the Party of Socialists. The meeting took place in June 2019, and a few days later Plahotniuc fled abroad.
In June 2020, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office refused to initiate a criminal case against Dodon because they did not see signs of a crime. The prosecutor's office was supported by the court of Chisinau, but on May 17 the Court of Appeal overturned this decision.
In the same year, the Dossier Center published an investigation stating that working documents from the secretariat of intelligence general Vladimir Chernov (who headed the Russian President’s department for interregional and cultural relations with foreign countries) indicate that Igor Dodon called Moscow and transmitted texts of their speeches for approval. As the Dossier Center pointed out, the ex-president of Moldova and his inner circle were under the "dense influence of the Kremlin." In particular, in February 2019, three days before his speech at the Munich Security Conference, Dodon, through the Russian Ambassador to Moldova, Oleg Vasnetsov, handed over to General Chernov the text of his speech and the presentation of the Big Package for Moldova project.
At the end of 2021, Igor Dodon announced that he had become a suspect in a criminal case of embezzlement of $12 million. The investigation believes that in 2008 the management of Energocom, which is responsible for providing Moldova with electricity, colluded with employees of the Ministry of Economy, the National Agency for Energy Regulation and a number of persons from abroad. According to the prosecutor's office, the accomplices of the collusion overestimated the purchase price of electricity and appropriated the difference. Dodon in 2008 headed the Ministry of Economy of Moldova and was the first vice-premier of the country.
