Russia controls about 22% of Ukraine’s agricultural land – SciTechDaily

Russian troops control approximately 22% of Ukraine's agricultural land. This is written by the SciTechDaily publication, which analyzed satellite images of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Among Russian-controlled Ukrainian farmlands, 28% of the area under winter crops and 18% under spring crops are under Russian control. Before the war, Ukraine provided 46% of world exports of sunflower oil, 9% of wheat, 17% of barley and 12% of corn, according to the US Agricultural Service.

“The world granary is at war. We are in the early stages of an ongoing food crisis that is likely to affect every country and person on earth in one way or another,” said NASA Harvest Program Director Inbal Becker-Reshef.

According to him, this year the yield of winter wheat in Ukraine could be about 4.1 tons per hectare: “This is not as much as the record wheat harvest in 2021, but still significant, given the circumstances.” However, as NASA researcher Sergey Skakun explained, this does not guarantee that the crop will be harvested and sent to the market. The reason for this is the naval blockade of ports and unexploded ordnance in the fields.
