Canada has expanded anti-Russian sanctions because of the war in Ukraine: the Regnum news agency, Roskomnadzor, several Russian journalists, including Channel One host Ekaterina Andreeva, and Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill (Vladimir Gundyaev) fell under the restrictions. It is reported by TASS.
Earlier, Gundyaev was included in the sanctions list by the British authorities.
On May 31, the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, stated that Patriarch Kirill (Vladimir Gundyaev) should be included in the "black list" of the European Union (EU). However, Hungary opposed this. Pope Francis said that Patriarch Kirill, during a conversation via video link, read from a piece of paper for twenty minutes and gave arguments justifying Russia's war against Ukraine. Later, the Russian Orthodox Church published a speech by Gundyaev, in which he, addressing the Pope, spoke about the "flying time of missiles" and the expansion of NATO. In April, 190 priests of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) of the Moscow Patriarchate demanded that Patriarch Kirill be brought before a church tribunal because of his support for Russia's war of conquest against Ukraine.
In May, Canada imposed sanctions against four Russian companies and 22 individuals. The list included the head of the board of directors of the National Media Group and the mother of the children of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Alina Kabaeva. On May 20, Canada also imposed sanctions on 14 Russians. Among them are "Russian oligarchs, members of their families and people from Putin's entourage," the Canadian Foreign Ministry reported. In particular, restrictions were imposed on the head of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov, the ex-head of Uralkhim Dmitry Mazepin and his son, racing driver Nikita Mazepin, entrepreneur Alexander Lebedev, entrepreneurs Gleb and Ksenia Frank, Gazprom partner Farhad Akhmedov, president of the Mercury group of companies » Igor Kesaev, Chairman of the Board of Rosseti Andrey Ryumin, daughter-in-law of Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko – Yulia Matvienko.
