In Japan, 110,675 new cases of coronavirus infection were registered per day. This is a record figure for the country since February 5, when the previous anti-record for cases was recorded (104,168 cases). It is reported by the Japan Times.
According to the publication, a sharp increase in infections was recorded in several prefectures at once. In Tokyo, 18,919 new episodes were revealed on Saturday, almost double the number recorded a week earlier.
The number of new cases in Osaka has more than doubled from last week's data. The prefecture has recorded 12,351 infections.
On July 13, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for the return of masks to protect against coronavirus worldwide.
He said the pandemic is "far from over" and noted that sub-variants of the omicron strain continue to cause new waves of illness, hospitalizations and deaths around the world.
“I am concerned that the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise, putting additional strain on overburdened health systems and healthcare workers,” Ghebreyesus said. The head of WHO also expressed concern about the growing trend in mortality.
