The Leninsky District Court of Saratov banned the anonymous Tor browser in Russia. As the local publication Vzglyad-info clarifies , the prosecutor's office of the Saratov region filed a lawsuit "for the recognition of information as prohibited".
On July 22, Roskomnadzor (RKN) unblocked the website of the anonymous browser and network The Tor Project, Inc. on Russian territory. Thus, Tor lasted only six days in the authorized status. Now the RKN can block the browser again.
Interests The Tor Project, Inc. Ekaterina Abashina, a lawyer from Roskomsvoboda, represented the court. After the RKN unblocked Tor, her colleague Sarkis Darbinyan told The Insider that "the battle for Tor in the Russian courts is not over yet."
The Saratov District Court ruled to add Tor to the register of prohibited information on December 18, 2017. The service began to be blocked in December 2021 due to access to “forbidden information” on the page that talks about the project. It was not specified what kind of prohibited information in question.
