Argentina, Brazil and Mexico did not join the position of the countries of North and South America condemning Russia for the war in Ukraine. This was announced by the countries at the 15th Conference of Defense Ministers of America (CDMA) in Brasilia.
The countries believe that the resolution of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict should be dealt with at the UN site. Mexico stressed that the war in Ukraine is not within the competence of the conference.
At the same time, Haiti, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, Canada, Colombia, Paraguay, the United States and Ecuador strongly condemned the war unleashed by Russia in Ukraine.
Since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela have not supported anti-Russian sanctions. In particular, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has previously said that the sanctions have failed. In June, he spoke on the phone with Putin. During the conversation, they discussed global food security and confirmed their intention to strengthen the strategic partnership between countries in the field of agriculture and energy. Brazil did not join the sanctions in order to continue buying fertilizers from Russia.
In turn, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador opposed sanctions against Russia. He stated that the conflict should be resolved through negotiations, and explained his position by the fact that he wants to "maintain good relations with all governments."
The American Defense Secretary's Conference has been held every two years since 1995. Representatives of 34 countries participate in it. This year it was held in Brasilia from 25 to 29 July.
