In the USSR, atheism was actively supported by party and state bodies until 1988.

“We have to fight religion. This is the ABC of all materialism and, consequently, of Marxism. But Marxism is not materialism that stops at the ABC. Marxism goes further. He says: one must be able to fight against religion, and for this it is necessary to explain materialistically the source of faith and religion among the masses,” said Lenin.

In addition to the propaganda of atheism, in the 1920s and 1930s, state bodies carried out mass arrests and persecution of the clergy and religious preachers.
