China to impose sanctions on Nancy Pelosi and her family

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the imposition of sanctions against the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.

This came after she flew to Taiwan, becoming the highest-ranking American politician to visit the island in 25 years. Pelosi also became the highest-ranking US official under Chinese restrictions. The same measures will be taken against Pelosi's next of kin. Last year, similar sanctions were imposed on former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. He called for recognition of Taiwan as a "free and sovereign country".

Earlier, China began imposing trade restrictions and sanctions against Taiwan itself. Imports from the island of lemons, grapefruits and oranges were suspended, as well as two types of fish – frozen mackerel and hairtails. Disciplinary action was also taken against the Taiwan Democracy Foundation and the Foundation for International Cooperation and Development. According to the Chinese authorities, under the guise of "democracy", the foundations are engaged in separatist activities aimed at proclaiming the independence of Taiwan.

Following Pelosi's visit, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) began a massive live-fire military exercise in six areas around Taiwan. For the duration of the exercise, China has restricted flights to the island, suspended the supply of sand and banned some imports of Taiwanese products, including tea, dried fruits, honey, cocoa beans and vegetables.
