Ukraine forcibly confiscated Russian assets worth 45.9 billion rubles – Zelensky

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced the forced confiscation of Russian assets worth 28 billion hryvnia (45.9 billion rubles). He spoke about it in the evening address.

The President held a meeting on the sanctions policy on 5 August. Officials told him that work was ongoing and offered to seize another 900 objects belonging to Russia.

According to him, if we evaluate the property not only of the Russian state, but also of residents, then we are talking about 36,000 positions for seizure. All funds will be used to compensate for the damage caused by Russia during the war.

“In Europe, in the United States, work is underway on bills that will expand the possibilities for the confiscation of Russian assets for Ukraine. […] Russia will definitely pay – both politically and financially, and with its own future, which Russia is losing with every blow against us.”

Earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved Zelensky's decree on the confiscation of Russian property and assets in the country. It was reported that 903 objects were subject to confiscation.

On July 14, after a Russian strike on the center of Vinnytsia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued an address in which he called on Western countries, in particular the United States, to recognize Russia as a terrorist state. After that, the deputies of the Just Russia – For Truth faction submitted to the State Duma a bill on recognizing Ukraine as a terrorist state and on confiscation of the property of its citizens in favor of Russia. The draft law also deals with the procedure for recognizing other foreign states as "terrorist" or "sponsors of terrorism". Which countries will be included in the list will be decided by the government.
