FSB announced the detention of six members of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Crimea

In Dzhankoy and Yalta, six members of the Islamic political organization Hizb ut-Tahrir were detained. Interfax writes about this with reference to the Center for Public Relations (CSO) of the FSB.

All detainees were searched at their places of residence. The security forces confiscated Hizb ut-Tahrir materials, communications equipment and electronic media from them.

“In the course of the activities carried out, it was established that, while coordinating the emissaries of the MTO staying in Ukraine, these persons carried out purposeful work to spread terrorist ideology on the territory of our country. In the process of secret meetings, they recruited into their ranks residents of Russia from among local Muslims, ”the FSB said.

Hizb ut-Tahrir, an international Islamic political organization, was banned in Russia as a terrorist organization in 2003. It operated legally on the territory of Ukraine, but after the annexation of Crimea, Russian security forces began to persecute alleged supporters of the party. In 2019, 25 Crimean Muslim Tatars were arrested in Crimea, each of whom was charged with terrorism (Article 205.5 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and preparing to seize power on the peninsula (Article 278 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Most have already been sentenced to between 12 and 19 years in prison.
