Hungary has published a textbook on geography for the 8th grade with anti-Ukrainian content. It was developed by the state center OFI and is mandatory for all Hungarian schoolchildren.
The textbook states that the majority of the population of Ukraine are Ukrainians, but many Russians live in the east of the country, and “they make up the majority” on the Crimean peninsula. The authors of the textbook do not mention the Crimean Tatars.
According to the authors of the textbook, the annexation of Crimea is the result of an armed conflict, which, in turn, arose as a result of hostility between two ethnic groups – Ukrainians and Russians.
A separate paragraph is given to the Carpathians. They are called "the only high mountains in the country", and their description is limited to the fact that these are mountains "at the foot of which are located the historical Hungarian cities: Ungvar (Uzhgorod), Munkach (Mukachevo), Khust". Transcarpathia, according to the authors of the textbook, is "one of the most backward regions" of Ukraine.
The authors of the textbook describe the general situation in Ukraine as follows:
“The population of Ukraine is rapidly declining due to natural decline and emigration. The health of the population leaves much to be desired, and they expect almost the lowest life expectancy on the continent. The general economic situation of the country is unfavorable for the Hungarians.”
The textbook also calls into question the sovereignty of Ukraine. This is indicated by one of the illustrations in the textbook:
Representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Ukraine have already held a meeting with their Hungarian counterparts, at which they demanded to correct the textbook. They stressed the unacceptability of disinformation and misrepresentation.
