Ratko Mladic admitted to prison hospital in The Hague

Former head of the Republika Srpska army and one of the leaders of the Serbs during the collapse of Yugoslavia, Ratko Mladic, was hospitalized in The Hague with pneumonia and heart murmurs. This is reported by TASS with reference to his son Darko Mladic.

He said that his father's condition is assessed as serious:

“He was admitted to the prison hospital with symptoms of general weakness, he was found to have pneumonia and a weakened heart, murmurs appeared. <…> The condition is serious, we were promised to provide the results by Monday at the latest.”

Mladic, along with other leaders of the Republika Srpska, was accused by the Hague International Tribunal of war crimes in 1996. In total, there were 16 counts in the indictment, of which one was for "genocide" and three for "crimes against humanity." In particular, Mladic is accused of the blockade of Sarajevo, which killed about 10 thousand people, as well as the massacre in Srebrenica.

The capture and extradition of Mladic to the Hague Tribunal was one of the conditions for Serbia's entry into the European Union. In 2011, he was arrested in Serbia. On November 22, 2017, the Hague Tribunal sentenced Mladic to life imprisonment.
