At least a thousand civilians died in Izyum during Russian occupation – city council head

During the Russian occupation of Izyum, at least a thousand civilians were killed. This was stated by the chairman of the Izyum City Council Maxim Strelnikov, reports Korrespondent.net.

“Since the occupiers here, as in other places, committed war crimes, they tried to hide them. According to the information that we have, at least one thousand local residents died as a result of military operations. Unfortunately, even more people suffered due to the fact that they were not provided with timely medical assistance, ”said Strelnikov.

According to him, one of the main tasks of the authorities now is to provide residents with medicines and hospitalize the sick and wounded.

“Recently, it was possible to carry out the so-called quiet evacuation. Therefore, women, children under 14 and the elderly had the opportunity to leave the city and are on the territory of Ukraine. Most are waiting to return to their homes. But the situation with critical infrastructure in the city is very difficult, which is a challenge for us. These issues will be discussed at the highest level and decisions will be made. We hope that we will have time to do everything so that the winter is not unexpected for us, ”said Strelnikov.

He said that more than 80% of the city's infrastructure has now been destroyed in the city, including private, multi-apartment residential buildings, state and municipal institutions, as well as industrial enterprises. “The worst thing is that winter is ahead. And the centralized heating, which was used by most residents, was destroyed, ”added Strelnikov.

In turn, the mayor of Izyum, Valery Marchenko, in a conversation with the BBC, also spoke about the destruction in the city. “Ever since March, when the occupiers bombed with planes and artillery, our city was defeated, high-rise buildings and infrastructure were damaged. Almost all boiler houses have been bombed, and the heating season is a big question mark. Almost 70% of high-rise buildings were damaged, completely bombed. The situation is very difficult,” he said.

The fact that Ukraine regained Izyum as a result of a powerful counteroffensive became known on September 10th.
