In Russia, they proposed to toughen the punishment for treason and espionage – up to life, with deprivation of citizenship and without the right to appeal. State Duma deputy from the Liberal Democratic Party, the first deputy head of the security committee Andrei Lugovoi, who made the proposal, considers it "as relevant as ever" and promised to submit the draft to the State Duma "in the near future."
“The number of those who have crossed the moral line in relation to their homeland, people is growing exponentially. But it's one thing if a liberal orchestra plays on the orders of foreign sponsors and their symphonies no longer touch the Russian people. And it’s another matter when any provocation can result in the death of both the military and the civilian population, ”the deputy wrote in his Telegram channel.
In his opinion, “enough we have given free rein to breed terry traitors who call themselves the liberal opposition”, and now, in the conditions of a “special operation”, it’s time to protect the country from “foreign agents” acting in the interests of the “English special services”.
At the same time, from the point of view of Lugovoi, it is not worth limiting yourself to a life sentence – you should immediately deprive your citizenship and the right to appeal. The current Constitution of the Russian Federation, however, prohibits this. The deputy notes that the draft can be submitted to the State Duma already in the autumn session.
Lugovoy is an MP who the ECtHR and the British authorities believe was involved in the murder of former KGB and FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko. One of the latest draft laws that Lugovoi submitted to the State Duma dealt with the topic of “foreign agents” and provided for a ban on teaching for those whom the Russian authorities consider to be such a “foreign agent”. The law was passed in July.
