Putin still doesn’t see war in Ukraine as a mistake – German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

Russian President Vladimir Putin, unfortunately, still does not consider the war in Ukraine a mistake, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said following a telephone conversation yesterday. It is reported by Reuters.

Interfax also quotes Scholz: "I didn't see any new positions appear, but talking to each other is still important." According to the agency, the Chancellor stated this at a joint press conference with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.

After a 90-minute conversation with Putin, Scholz said that Russia should withdraw its troops from Ukraine, recognize the country's sovereignty and its territorial integrity. He urged Putin to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict as soon as possible. The chancellor also stressed the need to ensure security at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and urged Putin to comply with the grain agreement.

The conversation between Scholz and Putin on September 13 was reported by the press service of the German government. The press service of the Kremlin, in turn, reported that they discussed the situation around Ukraine. Putin “draws the attention of the Federal Chancellor to flagrant violations of international humanitarian law by the Ukrainian side, the ongoing shelling of the cities of Donbass,” the report says.

Earlier, retired SBU Major General Viktor Yagun told The Insider that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron warned him during calls to Vladimir Putin. In a conversation, the leaders said that if Russia "continues in the same spirit and the countries have to support Ukraine as well, then there will be parity and missiles will fly to the territory of the Russian Federation." According to Yagun, in this case, Ukraine will be provided with the necessary weapons.
