The Supreme Court of Russia recognized the Islamic Renaissance Party of Tajikistan (IRPT) as a terrorist organization and banned its activities in the country. This is reported by the Russian Agency for Legal and Judicial Information with reference to the press service of the court.
Thus, the Supreme Court satisfied the claim of the Prosecutor General's Office to recognize the IRPT as a terrorist organization. According to Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov, the appeal to the court was a response to the request of the Prosecutor General of Tajikistan, Yusuf Rahmon, "to recognize certain organizations in Russia as terrorist."
The IRPT is an opposition Islamist political organization founded in 1973. During the civil war (1992–1997) in Tajikistan, she was part of the United Tajik Opposition, which opposed the Popular Front.
In June 1997, the IRPT leader, theologian Said Abdullo Nuri, and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon signed the "General Agreement for Peace in Tajikistan", ending the civil war. In 2015, the Supreme Court of Tajikistan recognized the IRPT as a terrorist organization and banned its activities. After that, many members of the party were detained, some managed to leave Tajikistan.
