For the first time in history, the ECtHR is headed by a woman – Irish judge Shiofra O’Leary

Irish Judge Shiofra O'Leary has been elected as the new President of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). This was reported by the press service of the court.

O'Leary became the first woman to head the ECtHR. She will replace the Icelandic Robert Spano, who has served as President of the Court since May 18, 2020. His term of office expires on October 31, 2022.

O'Leary was appointed as a Judge of the ECtHR for Ireland in 2015. Prior to that, she taught for several years at European universities.

On March 15, 2022, Russia filed an application to withdraw from the Council of Europe. Following this, the State Duma adopted a law on Russia's non-compliance with the decisions of the ECtHR adopted after that date. Now the decisions of the Russian courts take precedence over the decisions of the ECHR, and payments of monetary compensation under its decisions, which entered into force before March 15, are made only in rubles and only to accounts in Russian banks.
