Japan’s Foreign Ministry demands an apology from Russia for the detention of the consul

The Japanese Foreign Ministry said that the detention of the Japanese consul in Moscow is a violation of the Vienna Convention, which is "absolutely unacceptable." The department summoned the Russian ambassador and expressed a strong protest to him, and also demanded an official apology.

According to Foreign Minister Yoshimas Hayashi, the consul did not commit illegal acts, and during his detention, “coercive measures were used.” At the same time, the Japanese side reported that the diplomat had already been released.

The detention of the consul in Vladivostok became known the day before. According to the FSB, he was detained "when receiving for money information of limited distribution about the current aspects of Russia's cooperation with one of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region and the impact of the Western sanctions policy on the economic situation in Primorsky Krai."

The FSB stated that the consul admitted his guilt and showed a video of the meeting during which he was detained. The footage shown shows how a man and a woman are having dinner in a restaurant, the man is sitting with his back to the camera, the woman's face is blurred. The video is not accompanied by sound or any commentary. The subtitles for the video contain a translation according to which the diplomat admits his guilt.
