Hungary again blocked EU sanctions against Patriarch Kirill – RFE/RL

Hungary again blocked the imposition of sanctions by the European Union against the head of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), Patriarch Kirill. This was announced by the journalist of Radio Liberty Rikard Jozwiak.

“Nothing surprising, but some EU member states tried to impose sanctions against Patriarch Kirill, but Hungary blocked them, like last time. “No religious leaders on the list,” the journalist writes on his Twitter.

Hungary blocked sanctions against Patriarch Kirill for the first time in early June. Josep Borrell, head of European diplomacy of the European Union, called for his inclusion in the sanctions lists. Shortly before this, Pope Francis said that Patriarch Kirill, during a conversation via video link, read from a piece of paper for twenty minutes and gave arguments justifying Russia's war against Ukraine.
