Army Major Jamie Lee Henry and her wife, Anna Gabrielyan, have been charged in the United States with attempting to transfer confidential medical data relating to US military personnel and officials to Russia, CBS reports . The prosecutor's office claims that the couple wanted to help the Russian side in the war in Ukraine.
Jamie Lee Henry is the first active duty officer in the history of the US Army to openly come out as transgender. She worked as a doctor at Fort Bragg (one of the main garrisons of the US Army) in North Carolina, her wife is an anesthesiologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. At the same time, Henry had access to highly secret medical documents. Gabrielyan speaks English and Russian.
They were detained as a result of an operation by US intelligence agencies. The couple were allegedly contacted by an FBI agent who posed as an employee of the Russian embassy in Washington. According to the prosecution, Henry and Gabrielyan offered to give her information about their patients – the US military, who were treated at the Fort Bragg base.
On August 31, they allegedly met with an FBI agent in a Baltimore hotel and handed over medical information about two patients at the hospital where Gabrielyan worked and five who were being treated at Fort Bragg. The indictment includes a current employee of the Ministry of Defense, a retired officer, the wife of an army veteran, as well as the wives of two dead army veterans.
Henry and Gabrielian are charged with conspiracy and violating a federal law that prohibits the disclosure of confidential medical information without the patient's consent or knowledge. The punishment can be up to 15 years.
