US President Joe Biden has said no one in the US should go to jail for "mere possession of marijuana." He announced an amnesty for all federal offenses related to possession of the drug.
“Today I will take action to end our failed approach [to this issue],” Biden tweeted.
Biden gave a list of steps to take. First, it is an amnesty for all federal crimes that involve possession of marijuana. “There are thousands of people who were convicted simply for possession. As a result, they may be deprived of employment, housing or educational opportunities. Amnesty will remove this burden from them,” he said.
Second, he urged governors to pardon all Americans who committed "simple offenses" related to drug possession. “No one should be in federal prison solely for possession of marijuana. Also, no one should go to state jail for this reason."
Third, Biden called for a review of the dangers of marijuana within the framework of federal law: “We classify marijuana in the same class as heroin and consider it more dangerous than fentanyl. It's pointless".
