Journalists from Mediazona and the BBC Russian Service confirmed the deaths of at least 7,822 Russian servicemen in the war in Ukraine. 41 of them are Russians mobilized over the past month, Mediazona reports .
Journalists note that from October 7 to October 21, 638 soldiers were killed. It is noted that some of the losses are non-combat, as military personnel die in training centers, at training grounds and in military units. Also during this time, losses among volunteer detachments increased (more than 800 people), their number is comparable to the losses in the Airborne Forces and motorized rifle troops (more than 1200 dead). Volunteers include fighters from the BARS and Akhmat detachments, as well as military personnel from regional battalions and those who signed a short-term contract with the Ministry of Defense after the start of the war.
Most of the dead were from the Krasnodar Territory (329 people), Dagestan (321) and Buryatia (302). Least of all – from the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (2 people), the Nenets Autonomous Okrug (4) and the Magadan Region (7). Journalists suggest that the frequent deaths of soldiers from certain regions can be explained by a large number of military units, low wages and unemployment. Most death reports come from regions where the average salary is below the median in Russia.
On October 12, Important Stories, citing a source among the Russian special services and an FSB officer, reported that Russia's irretrievable losses in the war with Ukraine could be more than 90,000 people.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense has reported three times on the deaths of Russian servicemen. For the last time, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, on the day the “partial” mobilization was announced in the country, September 21, said that 5,937 Russian soldiers had died since the beginning of the “special operation”.
