Xi Jinping re-elected as Secretary General of the Communist Party of China for a third term

Xi Jinping has been re-elected as General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party's Central Committee for a third term, Xinhua reports .

"We just held the first plenary meeting of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, elected a new leadership of the Central Committee, and elected me to the post of general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China," Xi said.

A new seven-member standing committee of the Politburo has also been approved, which will lead the Communist Party for the next five years. In addition to Xi Jinping, 69, it included Li Qiang, 63, Li Xi, 66, Ding Xuexiang, 60, Cai Qi, 66, Wang Huning, 67, and Zhao Leji, 65.

Xi has served as Secretary General since 2012. He is not only the head of state, holding the post of chairman of the country, but also holds senior positions in the party and the army, sometimes he is called the "supreme leader" of China.
