In the Indian city of Morbi, a suspension bridge built in the 19th century collapsed. The Times Of India, citing a Gujarat state minister, writes that at least 35 people died as a result.
The publication also cites the data of the deputy from the district of Rajkot Mohan Kundaria. He said at least 50 people were killed in the collapse. Local media reports that 300-400 people were on the bridge at the time of the crash. Videos shared by eyewitnesses on social media show many people hanging from the cables of the bridge.
For the past six months, the 140-year-old 230-meter bridge has been under reconstruction. It only opened in mid-October. According to local officials, the collapse occurred due to the fact that the bridge could not bear the weight of the people on it.
