RT , Rossiyskaya Gazeta and other pro-Kremlin media, citing TASS, wrote about the statement of the Romanian Foreign Ministry regarding the absence of territorial claims to Ukraine. The RT news says:
“The Romanian Foreign Ministry assured Ukraine that the country does not have any territorial claims against Kyiv.
According to TASS, the Romanian Foreign Ministry called "the idea that Romania has territorial claims against Ukraine" false.
They expressed "firm support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine"
The publication goes on to say that in October former Romanian Foreign Minister Andrei Marga said that Ukraine was within unnatural borders and should “cede its territories to Russia, Hungary, Poland and Romania.”
The Romanian Foreign Ministry did indeed publish a statement about the absence of territorial claims against Ukraine, but they did so in response to Vladimir Putin's assertion . The Russian President stated:
“We also know about the ideas of creating a great state “from sea to sea” among some of the political beau monde in Poland – before the Second World War, there was a lot of talk about this, it was a fix idea – from the Baltic Sea to the Black.
Now we see the arms of the leaders of Poland and Ukraine, but the idea is alive. And the idea of the absorption of Ukraine, it has not gone away. But almost nobody knows this. This is only in archival documents.
Just as surely – not certainly, but definitely – the idea of returning those territories that were torn away from Poland is spoken of, it must be said directly about this, Stalin after the Second World War. Large, large areas from Romania, from Hungary were torn away. It was no coincidence that I said in Valdai that Russia could be the only real, genuine guarantor of Ukrainian statehood and sovereignty.”
In response to this, the Romanian Foreign Ministry wrote:
“The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejects the statements made by the President of the Russian Federation in his speech on the occasion of National Unity Day, which falsely suggest Romanian territorial claims to Ukraine.
The Foreign Ministry emphasizes that the aggressive war launched by Russia on February 24 is a serious and flagrant violation of the principles of international law, including the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
The fake that Hungary, Romania and especially Poland want to divide Ukraine into parts began to spread actively in the Russian media immediately after Russia's full-scale aggression against Ukraine. For example, recently RIA Novosti reported on Poland's plans to seize Western Ukraine. The source turned out to be a Polish website imitating the media with pro-Russian articles written in poor Polish. What “archival documents” Putin refers to when he claims that Poland decided to “swallow Ukraine” is also not clear.
And finally, the ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania, Andrei Marga, indeed from time to time makes scandalous statements that Ukraine should cede its territories to Russia, Poland, Hungary and Romania. However, he was Foreign Minister for only three months in 2012. Then Marga was removed from office ahead of schedule, and two weeks later information appeared that he and his wife were former state security informants in socialist Romania under Nicolae Ceausescu. Two years later, this was confirmed by the National Council for the Study of Security Archives. Marga tried to refute this, but lost in court, after which his political career was basically over. Since then, he has regularly spoken out in praise of Russia and condemnation of Ukraine, and the Romanian Foreign Ministry calls his statements "unacceptable."
