The head of the Cypriot Orthodox Church, Archbishop…

The head of the Cypriot Orthodox Church, Archbishop Chrysostomos II (aged 81), who had been ill with cancer for several years, has died. Local publications write that “a war is already raging” between the applicants for the position of the primate of the Cypriot Church.

Voting for the head of the Cypriot Church is held among all believers, the three candidates with the largest number of votes are then submitted to the synod for consideration, which elects one of them as the primate.

In 2020, Chrysostomos II decided, without the consent of the synod, to recognize the schismatic “Orthodox Church of Ukraine” – a number of hierarchs of the Cypriot church accused him of “flagrant violation” of the synodal system, called for the abolition of the “anti-canonical and invalid act” and convene a synod.
