The Moscow Art Theater removed the name of Kirill Serebryannikov from the program of the performance "Forest", as well as from the page on the theater's website. Serebryannikov himself announced this in his Telegram channel.
“The performance “Forest” has already been on the stage of the Moscow Art Theater for 18 years, and this is the first year when the director was called a DIRECTOR with a capital P))))) Someday, I’m sure, we will find out who ordered it to be done. And it will not be just some “official – OFFICIAL”, there will certainly be a surname. The names of idiots, scoundrels and obscurantists sometimes also need to be known, ”Serebryannikov wrote.
Previously, the names of other cultural figures who opposed the war were removed from the playbills of the performances. This happened to Dmitry Krymov and Boris Akunin.
Kirill Serebryannikov left Russia at the end of March. On March 28, 2022, the Khamovnichesky Court of Moscow granted the defense’s petition and canceled Serebrennikov’s probation and expunged his conviction under the article on fraud on an especially large scale.
On March 12, 2022, the autonomous non-profit organization Seventh Studio, recognized by Serebrennikov, was liquidated. The Seventh Studio is a theater troupe created in 2012 on the basis of its own acting and directing course at the Moscow Art Theater School.
In June 2020, Serebrennikov was sentenced to three years of probation in the Seventh Studio case. According to investigators, the defendants in the case stole 128 million rubles from the budget allocated for the Platforma project. Serebrennikov headed the Gogol Moscow Drama Theater in 2012, on its basis the director created the Gogol Center.
In February, it was reported that director and actor Alexei Agranovich was appointed the new artistic director of the Gogol Center.
