Vedomosti: The Ministry of Defense and the Presidential Administration did not support the bill on two-year military service

The bill on the return of two-year military service did not find support from the Presidential Administration and the Ministry of Defense. Vedomosti writes about this, citing sources in the Federation Council and the Moscow Region.

The idea to increase the period of military service belongs to deputies and senators. One of them is Mikhail Sheremet, State Duma deputy from Crimea. He stated that military training as it currently exists "does not mean quality training." However, according to a Vedomosti source close to the Defense Ministry, the authorities decided to focus on the qualitative rather than quantitative training of the military.

“Today, there is no need for a two-year military service. If the Federation Council also has such ideas, this is their right. We do not consider such legislative initiatives and believe that today there is no such need, ”Vedomosti quotes Andrey Kartapolov, chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee from United Russia.

In 1996, due to the Chechen campaign, the term of service in the Russian army and navy began to be two years. In 2006, the State Duma set new terms: for those called up on time from January 1, 2007 – one and a half years, and from January 1, 2008 – one year.
