François Asselino did post such a tweet. And he is actually the head of the People's Republican Union party, everything is correct here. And this party, created in 2007, regularly participates in elections at all levels, and Asselino himself was a candidate for the presidency of France in 2017.
But for all the years of its existence, Asselino's party has not been able to get a single candidate into any elective body. Asselino himself received 0.92% of the vote in the presidential election.
Asselino's party advocates the so-called Frexit – the exit of France from the EU, and at the same time from NATO. Apparently, this idea is not popular among the French. In addition, Asselino is known as a supporter of conspiracy theories, in particular, that his more successful rivals in the far-right camp – the National Front (later the National Rally) – a spoiler party created by the French establishment to prevent the exit of France from the EU.
Asselino tried to run for president in 2022, but was unable to collect the signatures of 500 elective office holders required for the nomination. The nomination took place against the backdrop of a sexual scandal: he was accused of harassment and intimidation of the victim. The trial in this case has not yet taken place.
Asselino, who is deeply anti-American and a member of the Franco-Russian Dialogue, has repeatedly made radically pro-Russian statements. So, in September 2022, he made the statement that the real reason for the Russian-Ukrainian war was the US plan to “dismantle” Russia. In October, Asselino on Twitter accused Vladimir Zelensky of calling for the genocide of Russian civilians “one by one” and Macron of arming and financing this “pure Nazi.” It soon became clear that Asselino interpreted Zelensky’s words addressed to Russian officials in such an original way:
“They have already begun to bite each other there: they are looking for the guilty, blaming some generals for the failures … This is the first bell that should be heard at all levels of Russian government. Until you all solve the problem with the one who started all this, who started this senseless war for Russia against Ukraine, you will be knocked out one by one, making scapegoats, so as not to admit that this war is a historical mistake for Russia.”
