France and Germany cannot yet work out a common response to the act to reduce inflation in the United States, disagreements between the two leading EU countries are growing, Bloomberg reports.
Foreign Policy wrote that the situation in Ukraine “as never before” worsened relations between France and Germany: Berlin is accused of “non-European behavior” due to large energy subsidies for its citizens and economy, unilateral deals with China and “insufficient financial and material support Ukraine”,
In addition, while Macron has voiced ideas about Europe’s “strategic autonomy” in the context of NATO, Scholz’s new priority has become “improving Germany’s relations with Washington” – as a result, France feels “wounded” and “Paris showers Berlin with criticism.”
“Why is Berlin taking independent action after years of not responding to Macron’s many European initiatives? Why did Scholz go to China alone? Why did Berlin order American F-35 fighters and not French Rafales? That Germany is suddenly taking unilateral initiatives without coordination with France, upsets the delicate balance between Paris and Berlin,” wrote Foreign Policy.
