President of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Alexander Dyukov spoke about the possible withdrawal of the organization from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the transition to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), RIA Novosti reports .
“A few months ago I said that Asia is premature. But now this is the opportunity that we must consider, ”said the head of the RFU. He added that the issue of moving to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will be discussed at the next executive committee of the organization.
On November 25, the president of the Russian Premier League (RPL), Alexander Alaev, said that Asia is less attractive for Russia "from a sporting and financial point of view."
On the same day, the honorary president of the RFU, Vyacheslav Koloskov, announced that the RFU would not withdraw from UEFA. “One person cannot accept this. The conference was not held, so there can be no talk of any transition now, ”he said.
At the end of February, the International Football Federation and UEFA excluded Russian teams and clubs from international tournaments. The teams do not play in European competitions, and the Russian team has lost its chances to participate in the 2022 World Cup.
