Chinese authorities, amid the outbreak of coronavirus protests, have created special working groups that will monitor the implementation of sanitary measures, the state newspaper Global Times writes.
According to the authorities, two polarized but erroneous tendencies have emerged in the implementation of measures to combat the epidemic in China – either complete isolation or complete lack of precautions, and the task of the working groups is not to allow such extremes.
The WSJ notes that open displays of anger are rare in China, and that protests erupt in multiple cities at once is “almost unheard of.” The New York Times writes that in Shanghai, some even issued a “rare call” for Xi Jinping to step down. At the same time, the Guardian believes that the Chinese leader “is unlikely to tolerate dissent for long.”
