The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, revealed the content of the new, ninth in a row, package of sanctions against Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine. She posted a message on Twitter.
Thus, the EU will blacklist 200 individuals and legal entities. According to von der Leyen, their list includes Russian army officers responsible for Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, military-industrial companies, State Duma deputies, members of the Federation Council, ministers, governors and political parties. Three Russian banks will also fall under the sanctions, including the Russian Regional Development Bank.
In addition, export control measures will be introduced, in particular over dual-use goods. Russia will be limited access to the supply of drones through third countries, such as Iran. The ninth package also included a ban on broadcasting four TV channels through different platforms. The mining sector is also subject to restrictions, including a ban on new investment.
“Russia continues to bring death and destruction to Ukraine. We support Ukraine and make Russia pay for its cruelty. The existing eight packages of sanctions that we introduced earlier are already biting hard. We will increase pressure on Russia with the ninth package,” the head of the EC wrote.
Bloomberg previously wrote about EU plans to seize Russia's frozen assets to help Ukraine. According to the publication, the EU also intends to introduce secondary restrictions against individuals and legal entities that helped sanctioned persons bypass the bans.
