Kosovo intends to apply for EU membership – RTK

The partially recognized republic of Kosovo intends to apply for EU membership on December 15, according to local TV channel Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK), citing a relevant government document substantiating its application for EU membership.

According to the channel, the application was drafted in November 2022, it states that EU membership is a strategic goal and is supported by 94% of the population of Kosovo. However, the prospects for Kosovo's accession to the EU remain unclear, since five countries, namely Spain, Cyprus, Greece, Slovakia and Romania, have not yet recognized the country's independence, RTK emphasizes. At the same time, the Kosovo authorities are confident that the country has fulfilled its obligations.

On December 11, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić convened an emergency meeting of the Security Council due to the aggravation of the conflict between Kosovo and Serbia against the backdrop of a message from Prime Minister Albin Kurti of Kosovo about an operation during which special forces of the Kosovo police will use all possible means to dismantle the barricades erected by the Serbs in the north of the region . After the meeting, Vučić said it was "the hardest day of my career" and that the Kosovo authorities could launch a false flag attack on EU monitors to blame Serbia.

According to Vučić, Serbia will ask NATO peacekeepers for permission to deploy Serbian military and police in Kosovo. This will be the first time that Belgrade has requested the deployment of troops in Kosovo in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution that ended the 1998-1999 war. It says that Serbia could send up to 1,000 military, police and customs officers to Orthodox religious sites, Serb-majority areas and border crossings if such a deployment is approved by the commander.
