The State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill on life imprisonment for "sabotage", introduced on December 8. It was signed by more than 300 deputies of the State Duma.

If the law is passed, paragraphs of Article 281 on sabotage will appear in the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation – 281.1 (“Promotion of sabotage activities”), 281.2 (“Training for the purpose of carrying out sabotage activities”) and 281.3 (“Organization of a sabotage community and participation in it”).

For the creation of a subversive community will face 15 to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to 1 million rubles or a life sentence. For inducing sabotage – up to 20 years in prison, and for participation in a sabotage community they will be imprisoned for a period of 5 to 10 years and fined up to 500 thousand rubles. Arming or financing sabotage will be punished by a term of 8 to 15 years with a fine of 300 to 700 thousand rubles or life imprisonment. Financing sabotage using one's official position will be punished with imprisonment from 10 to 20 years with a fine of up to 1 million rubles or life imprisonment.

They can be released from criminal liability if a person contributed to the prevention of a crime that he contributed to or financed. Now "sabotage" (Article 281 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) is punishable by imprisonment for a term of 10 to 20 years in prison or life imprisonment.

The explanatory note to the law says that the law will allow counteracting the involvement of citizens in "dangerous sabotage and incitement to commit a crime," as well as increase guarantees for the safety of life and health of citizens.
