Courts in Russia have begun to issue sentences under new articles on desertion and unauthorized abandonment of units during mobilization and hostilities: under the first article, one verdict is known – in Murmansk, under the second – two – in Veliky Novgorod and Solnechnogorsk. In Murmansk, in December, Maxim Malyshev was convicted, while he was accused not only of desertion, but also of attempted illegal border crossing. The deadline is unknown, since the trial was closed.

In Veliky Novgorod, Danil Ivanov, a military man, was suspended for five years, he was accused of leaving his place of service for more than a month. According to investigators, he left the unit in the Belgorod region on April 29 and returned voluntarily only on September 26, after mobilization was announced.
Aleksey Sozonov received a second sentence under this article in December. The details of the case are also unknown, the term is 4 years probation.
On September 20, the State Duma introduced the concepts of “mobilization” and “martial law” into the Criminal Code: “mobilization” amendments implied a whole set of new articles, including “Voluntary surrender” and “Looting”, and the period of martial law or wartime became aggravating circumstance. Previously, under the article on the unauthorized abandonment of a unit, they were given up to five years in prison, but for the same crime committed during mobilization, you can already get up to 10 years.
