The Yekaterinburg City Hall decided to evict Memorial from the premises it had occupied for 17 years, under the pretext of rent arrears

The Yekaterinburg Memorial Society is being evicted from the premises it has occupied for 17 years by decision of the mayor's office. This was announced by its chairman Alexei Mosin.

“Today, on the 105th anniversary of the formation of the Cheka (professional holiday of all employees of the Cheka-GPU-NKVD-MGB-KGB-FSB), the Ural Memorial received a “gift” from the Administration of the city of Yekaterinburg in the form of a notice of cancellation of the lease agreement for the premises occupied by us” , he writes on his Facebook page. At the same time, the lease agreement ends only in March 2023. The eviction notice was signed by Sergey Balakin, Deputy Head of the Municipal Property Management Department (DUMI).

The premises in question is a basement on Lenina Prospekt, which Memorial has rented from the administration of Yekaterinburg since 2005. The city authorities claim that the Yekaterinburg branch of the society allegedly owes the city 11,730 rubles 22 kopecks for rent. According to Mosin, "Memorial" paid all the bills on time and treats this "very carefully."

According to It's My City, prior to the eviction, Memorial was ordered to "return the property to the landlord with all separable and inseparable improvements made." Thus, DUMI takes over the bathroom and ventilation that Memorial installed, and demanded that the organization carry out a “refreshing repair” of networks and communications.

Before the International Memorial was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Ural media published an appeal by the Cossacks, who demanded that the local branch of the organization be evicted. It was sent to Yekaterinburg Mayor Alexei Orlov. The Cossacks claim that they are claiming the premises of the "Memorial" and want to open a military-patriotic club in it.
