The Investigative Committee of Russia reported that the bodies of more than 3,000 murdered local residents were found in Mariupol. Based on this, the Investigative Committee opened a criminal case against the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny and other Ukrainian military, including the commander of the Azov Battalion, Denys Prokopenko.
According to the Investigative Committee, it is the Ukrainian side that is to blame for the deaths, as it “deliberately used the city and its civilian infrastructure for military purposes.” The case was initiated under the article "Use of prohibited means and methods of warfare."
A few days earlier, Associated Press journalists studied satellite images and found more than 10,000 new graves in Mariupol. In the spring, the Ukrainian authorities reported at least 25 thousand dead, in June the UN confirmed the death of more than 1.3 thousand civilians.
In the spring, Mariupol actually came under the control of the Russian army after two months of continuous shelling and blockade. You can read the stories of city residents who survived the siege and occupation, and then managed to get to the territories controlled by Ukraine, here .
