In Brazil, supporters of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro broke into government buildings

Supporters of the former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, broke into the building of the National Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court. They are demanding the resignation of Lula de Silva, who took office a week ago, and claim that the election results were rigged.

The protesters smashed the windows of the congress building and organized a tent camp next to it. Police were called in to quell the riots, dispersing protesters with tear gas. The Spanish news agency EFE writes that Bolsonaro's supporters also attacked police cars. According to the news agency LUSA, they are calling for military intervention.

The BBC writes that de Silva himself is on an official trip to the state of Sao Paulo.

De Silva has already served as President of Brazil twice. He was first elected in 2002, after which he was able to be re-elected for a second term, despite conflicting opinions about his policies. He left office in 2011 with a record 90% approval rating.
