The Iranian authorities have officially confirmed that they will buy a batch of Su-35 fighters from Russia. Shahriyar Heydari, a member of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis), told Tasnim that the planes will be delivered early next year according to the Iranian calendar, which starts on March 21.
Heidari, a member of the parliamentary commission on national security and foreign policy, also said that Tehran ordered other weapons from Moscow, including air defense systems, missile systems and helicopters.
The Su-35 is a multirole supermaneuverable fighter developed by the Sukhoi Design Bureau in 2008.
At the end of December, the i24NEWS TV channel, citing intelligence sources, reported that Russia would supply Iran with 24 Su-35 fighters. According to sources, these aircraft were intended for sale to Egypt, but Cairo refused the deal under pressure from the United States.
