Cosa Nostra’s Most Wanted Boss Arrested in Sicily

Italian police in Sicily have detained the most wanted boss of Cosa Nostra, Matteo Messina Denaro.

According to Italian media, Denaro was detained in a private clinic in Palermo, where he was hospitalized for oncological examination.

Here is how the detention is described by local media: “At 9:35 am, the boss was put into a black van, which was accompanied by several cars of carabinieri to the applause of many residents of the city.”

Matteo Messina Denaro has been hiding from the police since 1993 and was at the top of the list of the most wanted Italian mafiosi. He is suspected of killing at least 50 people.

The arrest of Denaro happened exactly 30 years after the arrest of Toto Riina (the former head of the Cosa Nostra mafia, "boss of bosses"), which took place on January 15, 1993 in Palermo.
