German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has confirmed that Boris Pistorius has become the country's new defense minister. The head of state wrote about this on Twitter.
In his message, Scholz called Pistorius "an outstanding politician". “Thanks to his experience, competence and perseverance, as well as his big heart, he is just the person the Bundeswehr needs at a turning point,” the chancellor wrote.
Pistorius is a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, for the last ten years he headed the Ministry of the Interior and Sports of the federal state of Lower Saxony. Before that, the politician was the mayor of Osnabrück (from 2006 to 2013).
Former Minister of Defense Christina Lambrecht officially resigned the day before, on January 16th. The fact that she will leave her post, Bild announced on January 13. Lambrecht was criticized for the lack of military support for Ukraine, the delay in the army reform and the lack of ammunition in German warehouses.
