Earthquake death toll in Turkey and Syria tops 4,400

Update: a Russian has died in an earthquake in Turkey, TASS reports , citing a source in the Russian operational services.

As a result of two earthquakes that occurred in Turkey and Syria on February 6, at least 4,400 people died and 16,000 were injured, Reuters reports . The Turkish Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has confirmed 2,921 deaths. According to the Syrian government, as well as rescuers from the northwest of the country, which is controlled by the rebels, the death toll in Syria has exceeded 1,500 people.

AFAD claims that about 8,000 people were rescued from the rubble of 4,758 buildings.

Reuters correspondents visited the Turkish city of Antakya and reported that several ten-story houses collapsed there, there is no electricity or fuel in the city, and the weather is cold. In the affected regions, people left without a roof over their heads spend the night in cars and warm themselves around fires.

Two earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.8 caused extensive damage in the southern provinces of Turkey and northwestern Syria.
