Economic damage to Turkey from earthquakes estimated at $84 billion

Two earthquakes that killed more than 24,000 people in Turkey will result in losses to the national economy of more than $84 billion, or about 10% of GDP.

The 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes on Feb. 6 caused damage to residential buildings in the amount of about $70.8 billion and another $10.4 billion in national income losses, according to the Turkish Enterprise and Business Confederation.

The strongest earthquakes in Turkey and Syria occurred on February 6. The tremors were also felt in Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Greece, Cyprus and Israel.
