Nazarbayev was stripped of the title “Elbasy”

The ex-president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has lost the title of "elbasy" ("leader of the nation"), which he had been wearing since 2010, and now he also does not have the right to appeal to the people, state bodies and officials with initiatives. The corresponding law was signed by the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Also, the document, according to which Nazarbayev could not be detained, searched and interrogated, has now become invalid. Nazarbayev is subject to the general guarantees established by the constitution and the law "On the President" for all former leaders of the country.

In January, the Parliament of Kazakhstan declared the law “On Elbasy” invalid, and then the title of honorary senator, which Nazarbayev had had since 2019, was also abolished . In 2022, Kazakhstan adopted amendments that abolished the need to coordinate key policy directions with Nazarbayev and canceled Nazarbayev's lifetime chairmanship of the People's Assembly and the Security Council. A few months later, it turned out that the authorities returned almost $500 million to the treasury of Kazakhstan during the investigation of criminal cases related to Nazarbayev's relatives.
