In Petrozavodsk, the head of the colony and his deputy received 7 years in prison for beating a prisoner

In Petrozavodsk, the former head of IK-9 Ivan Saveliev and his deputy Ivan Kovalev were sentenced to 7 years in prison for torturing a prisoner. Mediazona reports this with reference to the victim's lawyer. Both were found guilty of exceeding official powers with the use of violence (clause “a”, part 3, article 286 of the Criminal Code). At the same time, the prosecution requested 8.5 years in prison for them. The defendants were also banned from holding positions in the civil service for three years after their release.

The case against Savelyev and Kovalyov was initiated in 2019 after a video of a prisoner being beaten was published. According to investigators, in 2014 they beat Abduvali Nasrulloev in the sanitary unit of the ShIZO. Nasrulloev himself said later that the video shows “not even 10 percent” of how the administration of the colony actually treats prisoners.
