British embassy guard sentenced to 13 years for spying for Russia

A former British embassy guard in Berlin was sentenced to 13 years and two months in prison after being found guilty of spying for Russia. The 58-year-old David Smith was sentenced in London, according to the BBC.

Smith was found guilty of passing information about embassy employees to Russian officials and intelligence agencies, as well as collecting additional information about the activities of British diplomats.

According to the materials of the case cited by the media, since November 2020, Smith has been handing over secret materials about the British Embassy to the Russian military attache in Germany, and also making copies of CCTV footage installed on the embassy building.

At first, Smith denied all accusations, but later agreed to admit the fact of espionage, but not the fact of receiving money for it.
